  5. I stopped to buy gas
  6. outside the Elkhorn diner
  7. where people pause.
  8.  
  9. on their way to somewhere
  10. or nowhere, their lives intersecting
  11. while drinking coffee, eating hamburgers, 
  12.   
  13. dousing ketchup on french fries 
  14. and poking quarters into the jukebox 
  15. to listen to a country song
  16.   
  17. they hum. I pumped gas, 
  18. clipped on my copper tinted sunglasses,
  19. yawned my way to I-70
  20.  
  21. on my way to somewhere
  22. and began sipping coffee from a styrofoam cup,
  23. watching steam escape.

  25. I gazed ahead
  26. where brown grass
  27. and cobalt sky are one.
